Subject: Context tokens for gentile populations
Date: 15 Elul 5782
I have been reviewing the baseline registry and I want to raise a concern that those of us working in Gentile Studies have been discussing for some time.
The registry, as currently specified, includes geographic tokens, communal tokens, institutional tokens. This is valuable work, and I do not wish to diminish what you have accomplished here. But I notice that you have nothing for gentile contexts. Nothing at all.
If we are serious about inclusion (and I believe this committee is serious about inclusion) we cannot publish a registry that renders minority populations invisible. Gentiles interact with our communal infrastructure every day. Interfaith families, coworkers, neighbors. These are real people navigating real spaces, and when they encounter our systems and find no place for themselves, we have communicated something about whose experience matters.
I would propose that the DEP registry include at least basic tokens for gentile communal contexts. This is what gentiles recognize. This is what makes them feel welcome in spaces that were not designed with their needs in mind.
