Subject: Opacity reconsidered
I want to revisit a decision from the governance thread.
We concluded that tokens are opaque — that the specification does not define their meaning. Communities define meaning locally. JRS means what the community using it says it means.
I accepted this at the time. I am no longer certain.
If JRS means different things to different communities, and I receive a document marked @JRS, what have I received? A claim about Jerusalem. But which Jerusalem? Whose Jerusalem?
Opacity was meant to avoid these questions. I am not sure it succeeds. It may simply defer them.
