The chair thanks R. Nachmani for bringing this historical precedent to the committee's attention. It is useful to see that others have faced similar challenges.

I would note the following:

1. The Geek Code was widely adopted in its time. It appears in signatures, profiles, and archives from the period. 2. The format persisted for years despite being, as Devorah notes, somewhat unparseable. 3. The community developed conventions around its use without formal enforcement.

Perhaps there is something to learn from this. The question is what.
