I have been reading the identity format specification.

Section 3 says: "Identity blocks are self-certified. The author is the sole authority on the content. Consuming systems MUST NOT treat identity blocks as verified identity claims."

What is the point of this?

An identity system that anyone can write and no one can verify. Someone claims BJ (born Jewish) and we accept it because they said so. Someone claims BC (convert) and we accept it because they said so. There is no check.

Why build a system for unverifiable claims?
