I have a deeper concern.

Political nationality and Jewish identity do not overlap. A Jew born in France is French by citizenship. But "French Jewish" is not a meaningful category in the way "Ashkenazi" or "Sephardi" is.

The Jews of France came from Algeria, from Poland, from Turkey. Their Frenchness is recent and political. Their Jewish identities are older and different from each other.

Country codes would tell us where someone's passport is from. Is that what we want?
