The ketubah point is well taken, but I think it misses my concern.
I am not asking the committee to accommodate gentiles for their sake. I am thinking of Jews-by-choice and those in conversion processes. These are people entering our community from backgrounds where gender is accepted as binary. When they encounter unfamiliar categories, they feel alienated. They wonder if they are doing things wrong.
We should not create barriers for those joining us. If a simpler categorical structure makes the path easier, we should consider it.
