My zeyde would have appreciated Rav Halevi's observation. He always said the goyishe clock was treif. Not because it told the wrong time, but because it told time wrongly.
"A Jew counts the hours from nightfall," he said. "The clock counts from midnight. Whose midnight? The Kaiser's midnight."
He was not a scholar. I do not know if his etymology was correct. But the instinct seems sound.
