My zeyde told me about a dispute in Munkács over which calendar to use for contracts. The rabbi said: use the year from Tishrei, the month from Nisan, and the day from (well, the day was not disputed).
A merchant complained: "But then a contract dated 15 Adar 5650 would come before a contract dated 15 Tevet 5650, even though Tevet is earlier in the year!"
The rabbi said: "Yes. And?"
The merchant said: "This makes no sense!"
The rabbi said: "Neither do contracts. You think lending money at interest makes sense? Write the date how I told you."
I do not think this story helps with the specification, but it has been on my mind.
