October 15, 1582 was the first day of the Gregorian calendar. October 4, 1582 was the last day of the Julian calendar. The days between did not exist — Pope Gregory removed them.
The Rebbetzin is asking: which calendar do you convert to? October 10, 1582 has no Gregorian date. But it has a real date. And a Julian date. And different countries adopted the Gregorian calendar at different times — Russia not until 5678, Greece not until 5683.
"Conversion" is not a single function. It is a family of functions, each with different historical assumptions.
