The chair proposes the following language for the specification:
On intensity:
Modifiers indicate stance or intensity relative to the author's own reference frame. The same notation from different authors may indicate different objective states.
On the special modifiers:
| Modifier | Meaning | |----------|---------| | ? | Uncertain / questioning | | * | Complicated (not reducible to a spectrum position) | | ! | Intense feelings (may combine with others) | | ~ | Approximate / "-ish" (doing it, but loosely) |
>
The ~ modifier is distinct from ?. Uncertain (?) indicates the author does not know their own position. Approximate (~) indicates the author knows exactly what they are doing; it is simply not rigorous.
