Rav Halevi speaks of selection and exclusion. This reminds me of something.
After the war, when my father's family tried to emigrate, they had to fill out forms. The forms asked about education, skills, languages. They did not ask: what songs did you sing at the rebbe's tisch? What stories did your grandmother tell? What did you learn in cheder that you still carry?
The forms captured what could be quantified. They missed what mattered.
I am not sure our specification should make the same mistake. But I am also not sure how to avoid it.
