Subject: The G code
I want to raise a category we have not discussed: gender.
Gender matters for Jewish practice in concrete ways. In my community, these distinctions were simply understood. Who counts for a minyan. Who reads from the Torah. Which side of the mechitza one sits on. Who is obligated in time-bound commandments.
A simple G code could capture this: - G:M — male - G:F — female
This affects how other codes are interpreted. K+ from a man may mean different kitchen obligations than K+ from a woman, depending on community.
Should we include gender in the specification?
