From: R. Halevi
Subject: Gender
Date: 26 Tammuz 5783

R. Nachmani proposes a binary. But before we proceed, we should acknowledge that the tradition is more complex than this.

The Talmud discusses categories beyond male and female. The androgynos, who has both male and female characteristics. The tumtum, whose sex is indeterminate. The ay'lonit and the saris, who develop characteristics different from their birth assignment.

These are not modern inventions. They are halakhic categories with extensive discussion.

If we are encoding gender, we should be aware that our tradition already recognized complexity.
