Nu, this reminds me.
In Munkács, the shammas kept a list. Which families could be called to the Torah, who had yahrzeit when, who was not speaking to whom. This was not written, he kept it in his head, but everyone called it "the list."
When Reb Shammas Eleazar died (this was before my time, my zeyde told me) the new shammas, Fishel, asked the chevra: what was on the list? And everyone told him different things. The butcher said the list had the order of aliyot by family status. The baker said no, it was alphabetical by father's name. The melamed said it was by seniority in the community.
They argued for weeks about a list that was never written down.
My grandfather said: "Fishel should have written something. Anything. Then at least they would argue about what he wrote instead of what Eleazar remembered."
