Rav Halevi's account is accurate. The terminology debate was extensive.
We considered: - "Civil convention" (implies religious/civil split) - "Standard convention" (implies others are non-standard) - "Modern convention" (implies break with tradition) - "Rabbinic convention" (contentious for other reasons) - "Transitional convention" (vague but neutral)
We settled on "transitional" because it was the least objectionable. I acknowledge it is also the least informative.
