Devorah's proposal is clean. I support it.
The choice of 'a' and 'b' from Aleph and Bet is a reasonable compromise. Communities can display these however they prefer — א and ב, I and II, Rishon and Sheni. The encoding is neutral.
Well. Mostly neutral. We are encoding in Latin letters.
