Returning to Devorah's practical question.

Whatever the historical complications, modern implementations need to convert modern dates. A user scheduling a meeting for next Tuesday does not care about Pope Gregory.

I propose we define conversion only for dates after, say, 5500. After that point, the calendar systems are stable. Before that point, we say "consult historical sources."

This covers the practical case while acknowledging the historical complexity.
