Gregorian Calendar Correspondence

Which direction is the correspondence?

We could define: given a date, produce the Gregorian equivalent. Or we could define: given a Gregorian date, produce the equivalent in our calendar.

The first says: our dates are primary, Gregorian dates are derived. The second says the opposite.

A "correspondence" claims symmetry. But the specification already takes a position. It defines dates. It does not define Gregorian dates. Our date is primary here.
