Subject: The scope question

The chair wants to step back and ask a procedural question.

We have discussed: - Talmudic gender categories - Modern gender identity - The mechitza as organizing principle - Trans and non-binary Jews - Communities that do not use mechitzot - Implementation complexity

All of these are legitimate concerns. But I want to ask: is gender within the scope of this specification?

The Jew Code describes Jewish identity: background, practice, belief, affiliation, relationship to Israel. These are ways of being Jewish.

Is gender a way of being Jewish? Or is gender something else — a human characteristic that interacts with Jewish practice but is not itself Jewish?
