Nachmani says we have discovered an established formalism. My grandfather told me about a melamed in Munkács who had a peculiar way of grading his students.
He did not mark answers right or wrong. He marked them "yes," "no," or "perhaps."
"Yes" meant the student understood. "No" meant the student did not understand. "Perhaps" meant the student had given an answer that could not be evaluated, either because it was incoherent, or because the melamed himself did not understand it.
The students hated the "perhaps" mark more than "no." A "no" could be fixed. A "perhaps" meant you did not know where you stood.
The Rebbetzin is asking what "perhaps" means for our specification.
