Subject: Three-valued logic
Date: 21 Kislev 5784
The chair would note that the specification's language was carefully chosen.
Early drafts used two-valued logic: indicators were either present or absent. The implementation subcommittee — Devorah was part of those discussions — raised the concern that absence was overloaded. It meant both "explicitly not observed" and "not mentioned."
The three-valued approach emerged from that concern. It maps to standard database semantics, as Devorah notes, which should simplify implementation.
But the Rebbetzin raises a question worth addressing: what does unstated actually mean?
