5001 is arbitrary. Why that year?

If we are choosing an epoch in Hebrew terms, why not year 1? Or year 5000 for round numbers? Or the year of the Exodus, which has religious significance?

Actually, year 2448 is traditionally the year of the Exodus. Nisan 2448. That would make the epoch religiously meaningful rather than arbitrary.

Or we could use the giving of the Torah at Sinai. 6 Sivan 2448. This is the foundational moment of Jewish law. A specification for Jewish protocols could appropriately count from the moment the Torah was given.
