Rav Halevi is right about reference frames.
In my grandfather's community, keeping kosher meant one thing. In my father's community in America, it meant something else. In my own kitchen, it means something else again.
If I write K++, I am comparing myself to the people I know. My grandfather would have called me K-. My secular neighbors would call me K++++. I call myself K++ because I know I could do more but mostly I do well.
The pluses are not measurements. They are feelings.
