Subject: The epoch question
Date: 27 Shevat 5780
I believe the Rebbetzin is observing that any epoch we choose must eventually be pinned to an external reference if implementations are to work together.
If I choose 1 Tishrei year 1 and you choose 6 Sivan 2448, our day counts will differ by some offset. To reconcile them, we need to know the difference in days. That difference is a conversion (between two dates in our calendar, yes) but the reconciliation still requires agreement.
And if we need to interact with non-Jewish systems, we need a further conversion. At some point, our epoch meets their epoch.
